Be part of the future of Infant Child & Adolescent Mental Health (ICAMH)
We offer postgraduate courses in child and adolescent mental health that are designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of professionals working with young people facing mental health challenges. Since their launch in 1998, over 500 student-clinicians from across New Zealand have completed the Postgraduate Certificate, with many continuing on to the Diploma and Masters level courses. These courses attract nurses, occupational therapists, social workers, psychologists, trainee psychiatrists, GPs, and school counsellors. Offering a flexible, blended learning experience that combines on-campus teaching with online coursework through the University’s Canvas platform. With a focus on practical, day-to-day clinical work, the program has received consistent feedback highlighting its value for anyone working in ICAMH services.
Funding available for most of our courses
Certificate (Foundational) courses have funding through the Te Pou Skills Matter program for those working in Te Whatu Ora, NGO and primary care settings.
CBT Courses & the Youth Forensic course have funding available through the Mental Health Directorate funding via Whāraurau
Funding is limited and subject to application process and eligibility criteria.
Our study options
Certificate
Develop the foundations of ICAMH practice with Foundational Courses in Child & Adolescent Development, Psychopathology, Assessment, Formulation, & Treatment planning. Together these course will provide the foundational knowledge and skills for clinicians in services that work with child and adolescent mental health.
Diploma
The diploma adds specialised courses for specific populations and approaches. You can develop theoretical knowledge in early childhood mental health or of therapy modalities across child and adolescent mental health. Establish and refine your therapy skills in our two Cognitive Behavioural Therapies courses that provide practical skills of applying the latest in CBT approaches across a variety of difficulties and populations. Develop specialised skills in working with youth addictions or youth forensic populations.
Masters
Combine the 60 points from the Certificate with an Additional 60 points from our Diploma courses, and add a research project of 45 points or a dissertation of 60 points to graduate with a Masters in Health Practice (ICAMH). This course will help you develop research skills which will enhance your practice and help you to develop and enhance the services you work in.
