Our Teaching
Te Ara Hāro members teach undergraduate and postgraduate students within the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences at the University of Auckland.
We provide a range of popular mental health courses as part of the following University programmes:
- Health Psychology
- Postgraduate courses in Infant, Child and Adolescent Mental Health for mental health clinicians
- Medicine
- Psychiatry
We also supervise research masters and doctorates in infant, child and adolescent mental health.

Increased funding
Since 2019, we have seen achieved 100% increase in funding for our postgraduate courses in infant, child and adolescent mental health (ICAMH).
Masters success
In 2021, the first clinicians completed the Masters in ICAMH programme.
New teaching staff
We welcomed Dr. Marthinus Bekker back to the ICAMH teaching team in 2024.

Postgraduate courses in Infant, Child and Adolescent Mental Health
Postgraduate Certificate in Health Sciences (Infant, Child and Adolescent Mental Health)
The Centre is contracted by Skills Matter, Te Pou to coordinate and deliver the Postgraduate Certificate in Health Sciences (Infant, Child and Adolescent Mental Health).
This programme is designed for graduates in medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, psychology and social work who want to develop their skills and knowledge in infant, child and adolescent mental health (ICAMH).
It has been running continuously since 1998 and we have a high proportion of students completing the programme each year. In 2020, there was a 60% increase in funding and all additional places were filled.
The programme consists of three courses:
- PSYCHIAT 747 – Child and Adolescent Development (15 Points)
- PSYCHIAT 740 – Child and Adolescent Psychopathology (15 Points)
- PSYCHIAT 768 – Assessment, Formulation and Treatment Planning in Child and Adolescent Mental Health (30 Points)
Once completed, the Certificate can be used towards the Postgraduate Diploma.
Postgraduate Diploma
This programme is designed for graduates in medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, psychology and social work who want to develop their skills and knowledge in infant, child and adolescent mental health (ICAMH).
It consists of these courses, which can be completed as standalone courses to achieve a Certificate of Proficiency.
- PSYCHIAT 769 – CBT with Children, Adolescents and their Families 1 (15 Points)
- PSYCHIAT 770 – CBT with Children, Adolescents and their Families 2 (15 Points)
- PSYCHIAT 766 – Youth Addiction and Co-existing Problems (15 Points )
- PSYCHIAT 730 – Early Childhood Mental Health (30 Points )
- PSYCHIAT 773 – Youth Forensic Psychiatry (30 points)
- PSYCHIAT 766 – Youth Addiction and Co-existing Problems (15 Points)
This Diploma can be used towards the Master of Health Practice (ICAMH).
Master of Health Practice (Infant, Child & Adolescent Mental Health)
In 2019, a Master of Health Practice (Infant, Child & Adolescent Mental Health) programme was offered for the first time, with first graduates expected in 2021. It was developed to meet the needs of graduates and healthcare professionals looking for an advanced postgraduate programme to develop their skills and knowledge of ICAMH.
This programme consists of achieving the following:
- Certificate in Health Sciences (ICAMH) (60 points)
- Diploma in Infant, Child and Adolescent Mental Health (60 points)
- Masters of Health Practice (ICAMH) (60 points)
These ICAMH courses are all offered through web-based learning and campus block teaching.
Health Psychology
- HLTHPSYC 122 – Behaviour, Health and Development (Suzanne Stevens & Karolina Stasiak)
This 15-point course is the core psychology foundational course for students in the health sciences and those preparing for a range of clinical pathways, including pharmacy, medicine, nursing and medical imaging.
It enables students to understand the biological, psychological and social factors that contribute to human behaviour and apply that understanding to healthcare practice.
Medicine
Medicine (MBChB)
We teach medical students at the University of Auckland during their second, third, fifth and sixth years.
Courses we have developed and continue to run include:
Human Early Life Development Integrated Learning Activity (MBChB 221 & 321, Trecia Wouldes)
Core child psychiatry training modules for 5th year medical students (MBChB 401 & 501, Hiran Thabrew)
We also participate in medical curriculum development, placement support and student assessment.
Psychiatry
RANZCP Specialist Training
We contribute to the training and development of new adult and child psychiatrists as part of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) – accredited Northern Region Basic and Advanced Training Committees.
Our roles include:
- Development and delivery of child psychiatry teaching
- Participation in trainee examinations
- Supervision of research projects
